“Callie Campbell, 11 years old, picks 75 to 125 pounds of cotton a day”

Callie Campbell, 11 years old, picks 75 to 125 pounds of cotton a day, and totes 50 pounds of it when sack gets full. No, I dont like it very much. Potawotamie County, Oklahoma. 1916 October 16. Lewis Wickes Hine, photographer (Library of Congress)
By the time Callie Campbell would have been old enough to have an 11-year-old child of her own, there wasn’t much cotton to pick in Oklahoma, and not just because of the Dust Bowl.
I like this picture very much. Despite her hard labor, Lewis Hine makes her look like a bride. Right click on the picture with your mouse and choose “view image” to see it larger. It’s a lovely thing to see.
Where did she go? Did her family move to California? Did she get married? Did she become an actress?
